My apologies to everyone who has become suicidal over my lack of postings. I have been very active online, but haven’t felt much like posting, and when I did feel like posting, it was usually over something that’s juuuuust a little too long for Twitter but definitely too short for a decent post. So, I’m going to harass you all with randomness.

1. I got back from Walt Disney World about a month ago. It was awesome, but it was HOT. As in we were in the park that has the least amount of shade on a 92 degree day with 92% humidity. Yeah. Luckily, my husband has finally agreed that we’re never going down for our anniversary again AND that he promised to never complain about the cold in Jan/Feb when we’re in Florida.

2. My husband has taken to a liberal use of powder (all kinds- baby powder, athlete’s foot powder, Gold Bond medicated… you name it, he uses it) in our master half bath. When I commented on the now white floor, his response was “Yes, I like to call it my…(yes, he really paused for dramatic effect) powder room.”

3. I can now be called a card carrying health nut. I’ve switched to coconut oil for almost all of my frying needs, with the only exception being when I really think butter or bacon fat is just too perfect. I am now drinking raw (unpasteurized) whole milk, and even enjoying it when it starts to go sour. I’m tossing all of my table salt and replacing it all with sea salt (if you get the right kind, it even tastes better), using my cast iron skillet as much as possible, and have just this week soaked grains and sprouted pinto beans to reduce the phytic acid in both. I’ve managed to find high fructose corn syrup and soy free tortillas, and despite the huge list of preservatives, consider that a major victory. I’ve found a local farmer’s market that sells grass fed/pastured meats, raw milk, high heat/short time pasteurized unhomogenized milk, and farm fresh eggs.  And I spend much time every day reading Kelly the Kitchen Kop because, well, it’s interesting and she’s nice and there’s a lot of good information that’s easy to understand on it. I’ve been wanting to give her a quality back link, but I can’t think of any terms that she might be trying for… And, as usual, when I went to her site to get an idea, I got sucked into more interesting posts. So, check out her politically incorrect nutrition blog, but don’t say that I didn’t warn you about getting sucked in for hours on end!

4. I had the misfortune of seeing one of my co-workers doing the Macarena. *shudder*

5. I really need to post more often!

6. Oh, and about that whole coconut oil/full fat milk thing? Yeah, I lost 13lbs in about 2 weeks.

  1. You big sweetie!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you! So when do I get to know your first name??

  2. I am having a scary macarena flashback now, but since I was getting worried about where you were, I’ll forgive you.

  3. Congrats on losing 13 lbs! Amazing what real food can do for a person!

What’s your twitter url? Mine is @Audabeth. I’m looking all over for yours and can’t find it! Follow me and I’ll follow you back. :)

Kelly- You’re very welcome. :-) And my name is Lori. I’ve just gone by WordVixen for so long, that it’s a part of me. It’s been my moniker since I got married (his last name is Fox- a vixen is a female fox…)

Jersey- *lol* thank you. I know, my bad! I’m too busy working on my niche sites and playing Frontierville.

Audrey- Thank you! It’s funny because it’s so obvious the connection between real food and real health. You know, over the holiday weekend when we went out to eat every day, I put 4 lbs back on? I’m almost back down now (give or take a pound), but I told my husband no more going out to eat until I get down to my next goal. I don’t even want it anymore! And my twitter url is http://twitter.com/wordvixen . I’ll head on over and follow you. :-)

  5. Cool!!!

  6. Hi Lori! First off, I am ecstatic that you lost 13 pounds drinking full fat raw milk! I always try to explain to people that fat doesn’t make you fat, processing does! Skim milk will make you gain weight more than whole because the sugar cannot be metabolized properly. Way to go.

My question that I forgot to ask when I replied to you on my blog. Why did you pick coconut oil? I have it and use it for making whole wheat vegan cookies for the girls, but I’m scared to use it in real food… I stick to extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil, sesame oil, butter!, and (yummy) bacon! You have me perplexed and intrigued…keep up the great job, and thanks for telling everyone else about it!

Healthnut- I know exactly what you mean! I’ve been trying to convince hubs to switch to whole milk for years. It’s a no-go, except with the Best Chocolate Milk Evar (Trickling Springs) which may or may not be whole milk (it doesn’t say on the label) but is still full of sugar. Funny, the man who complained that my cooking made him put on weight while he was drinking almost 20oz of milkshake a day still insists on 2% milk and margarine.

As for coconut oil, I’d been hearing about how cooking oils oxidize at high heat for a few years. When I found out that my cooking oil blend contained soy (bad, bad bad bad for anyone, but especially in my family where we have a history of hypothyroidism), I started searching out the safest oil to cook with. Almost everyone said olive oil or soy oil, and I KNEW those two were wrong. But a lot of other people were saying coconut oil and even lard. Most of them got flamed, but their explanations made the most sense! So I looked into it more and found out that in addition to being one of the safest oils for high heat cooking, that it had a lot of health benefits. Boosting metabolism was a biggie to me. My mother found a jar of Nutiva virgin coconut oil for $2 (I’m serious), so I gave it a try. I’ve been using it ever since.

Personally, I think the coconut oil is fantastic for frying and sauteeing. I always used real butter on my veggies, but I decided to experiment with the coconut oil and found that it brings out the flavors even better than butter does! Though a 50-50 combo is even better. Coconut oil and butter are deliciously synergistic, and I can even find a 50-50 blend of coconut oil and ghee at a local health food store. Which, by the way, might be a good way for you to go if you’re experimenting. Also, coconut oil makes awesome fries! I’ve heard that tallow or lard is even better, but coconut oil is more slippery than regular cooking oils, so it doesn’t cook in like, say, Wesson oil does. So it crisps up more, and that super slight coconut flavor isn’t sweet, so it just kind of boosts the flavor of the fries. My husband, who’s SO not on board with healthy fats, LOVES french fries made in coconut oil. He can’t taste the coconut at all (I can, very slightly) but he raves about how “light” they taste compared to normal fries.

Now, I’m going to stop babbling, BUT I did want to point out first that coconut oil was my very first step in real foodie-ism. I felt so much better eating foods cooked in coconut oil (even better than when I used no oil at all), that I paid more attention to the Real Food blogs and such. And now I’ve got one co-worker doing it, and between the two of us, we have about 3 more coworkers interested. :-D

  8. Well done on your recent journey into real foodism. I made a similar choice and now undertake a full fat diet, no grains, meat and lots of fruit/veg diet. Best decision I’ve ever made…
