Anyone who’s known me for 5 seconds can guess that I’m not a sports fan.  Seriously? I could give a rat’s…. tail.

But my husband asked if I wanted to go to the Hershey Bears VS Wilkesbarre-Scranton Penguins game, and thinking of research for my novel, I agreed. And to be honest, I really didn’t get into it, but mostly because my brain kept wandering off into what my MC would be thinking as she watched the game.

But there were some amusing moments during the game.

hershey-bears-sumo-and-cocoaI’m not sure what it is with sports having stupid things during the intermissions, but they had some people come out wearing sumo wrestler outfits to hit some pucks into the net. I don’t know what they won, but the other sumo ended up flat on his back on the ice and couldn’t get up without help. Which I thought was funny.

hershey-bears-and-wilkesbarre-scranton-penguins-fightThe cool thing is, there was a fist fight in the first 2 minutes of the game. I thought that was awesome, but I was so busy taking pix of the fight, that I forgot to pull out my Flip and video it. I spent the rest of the game clutching my digital camera in one hand, and my Flip in the other waiting for another fight. It never came. This made me sad. Which annoyed my companions because I spent the rest of the game and the 45 minute ride home complaining about the lack of fights.

hershey-bears-stanley-cupAnd for you sports nuts- that’s Cocoa posing with the Stanley Cup. I’m assuming that’s something important or special? My husband made me take the picture.

The Hershey Bears seem to be a pretty decent team, and won 3-2. On the other hand, they managed to not only miss a penalty shot, but took two shots at an unguarded net- and missed both.

The Penguins, however, seem to prefer slamming people into walls and sliding across the ice on their stomachs instead of their skates to actually making shots. Does this make them a bad team? Not necessarily. They may just have different goals than every other hockey team in the known world. I’m just sayin’.

  1. This sounds like the first hockey game I took my to-be-husband to (yes, I took him – not the other way around!). There on the ice were Lemieux, Jagr, and Gretzky (the Penguins were playing at home and there was Gretzky – first time I’d seen him live). The game went into overtime and we (Pens) won – the place went wild! My husband, God love him, turned to me and asked, “What happened? Why is everyone shouting?”

Three legends on the ice at the same time. It was lost on him. :)

PS- Have your husband translate this for you. ;) LOL

  2. I’m so vicariously disappointed there weren’t more fights. I used to be a big hockey fan, until I moved to the mid-west, where it’s all about basketball.

    Basketball fights are lame.

Lori- I recognize Gretzy, but that’s pretty much it. *lol* I’m still impressed that I noticed most of the goals…

Jersey- Yeah- fights in any other sport just aren’t as good. In fact, I was a little bummed that this fight only used fists. I was half hoping for a little hair pulling too. ;-)

  4. grrr fights. hockey is such a beautiful sport, if you want fights go to a boxing ring.

I’m a bit snooty about my hockey. ;)

and yeah the stanley cup is a *little* important. :P

Grace- *lol* I totally forgot that you’re into hockey! BTW, it’s good to see you around again :-) And I’m so not into boxing. Maybe because jumping around a mat isn’t as cool as the beautiful skating that hockey players do in between fights.

  6. Not sure if hockey and snooty should be in the same sentence :) I’m glad to hear you finally popped your Canadian cherry… Now you’ve just gotta work your way up to an NHL game!
