I had that happent to me once. It was John Jakes' North and South trilogy. I think the main character, Orry Main, dies in the second book, Love and War. I remember reading it and being absolutely devastated - so devastated, in fact, that I wrote to John Jakes and asked him WHY he'd done that. And he wrote me back! (Since I was in junior high when I did this, I was quite pleased at this). Oh! I had that happent to me once. It was John Jakes’ North and South trilogy.
